The final fight is the hardest one

There were a lot of unexpected results in the last round of the Russia Team Championship. Lentransgas from St. Petersburg not only vindicated it's worthiness after the poor start, but even took first place owing to Ivanov's victory over Glek. So the stars from Norilsk Nickel, all of them invited players, by the way, gave in to the ex-kings from St. Petersburg. Also students from the Maikop University helped our team, having defeated Gasovik from Tiumen. Our second team, despite the excellent start, was the last on the finish. Popov lost on time to Filippov, so the score in the match was 2.5:3.5. Yet the young players fought well. E. Alexeev performed better than any other of our city fellows, having scored 6 points out of 8! Thus two Russian gas teams (Lentransgas and Gasovik) and one nickel team (Norilsk Nickel) will play at the Europe Championship. Both the Tomsk and Maikop teams failed to qualify. It should be noted also that the number of players in these teams who had no relation to nickel as well as to students, Tomsk or Tiumen was very high.

The football method of defining the winner looks quite dubious in chess. The winner scored less points than second and third teams, only 15.5. Both Tiumen and Norilsk scored higher, yet they only won silver and bronze of the Championship.

"Modern chess is too much concerned with things like pawn structure. Forget it - checkmate ends the game". Nigel Short.

"Only a good bishop can be sacrificed, a bad bishop can only be lost." Yuri Razuvaev.
